Local 1004 was formed in Utah as a Salt Lake City chapter in 1976. Salt Lake City employees felt it necessary to organize in order to gain adjustments to their wages and obtain benefits such as dental insurance. In 1977, they were successful in obtaining a collective bargaining resolution under Mayor Ted Wilson. City employees have negotiated their wages, benefits and working conditions since that time. Negotiations are reduced to a written contract. The usual term of the contract is three years.
Local 1004 has members who are employed by the State of Utah and various muncipalities and counties in Utah. AFSCME represents its members in all phases of employment (including grievance handling and EEO/Discrimination matters), providing training, education, political action, legislative support and legal assistance when necessary.
